Fall Conference 2010
Way Out of the Box: Growing Beyond the Classroom
September 24 & 25, 2010
The Denver Center for the Performing Arts
1101 13th Street
Denver, CO 80204
Learn about proactive changes you can make to ensure your theatre program grows in an educational world where electives are fighting for their place in the school. There will be 25 different workshops available (see schedule below), which range from elementary education to high school. Get ideas and strategies for applying creative thinking skills in the classroom and beyond! Strategies for encouraging the further development of theatre arts activity throughout your school! Jazz up your performances with unconventional techniques! Workshops include performance elements, design elements, and technical elements; stay on the cutting edge with a repertoire of models and vocabulary needed to document and report the impact of your theatre program to stakeholders, including funders, teachers, school administrators, and parents. Discover everything from unorthodox casting methods to writing a murder mystery with your students.
The conference includes a special performance by the National Theatre Conservatory, and an Awards Luncheon to honor those making a difference in our communities ( a touching and inspirational tribute). There will be opportunities to attend shows at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts and/or Denver School of the Arts (a great way to spend an evening with the folks you met and networked with throughout the day).
This year’s conference is offered at a reduced cost! Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to interact and exchange ideas with theatre colleagues from across the state.

Roots of our Craft-Ashlee Temple, National Theatre Conservatory
Working with encouraging student exploration of the different methodologies and approaches to the craft of acting that have developed over the last 100 years beginning with Stanivslavsky and including Strasberg, Meisner, Spolin, Uta Hagen and others. We will be examining exercises and projects that can be used in the classroom that allow students to become aware and inspired to have entered a tradition of passionate artists who spent their lives developing and exploring the actor craft and also give young people a sense that they are the torch bearers that will continue on.
Stage Communication -Lawrence Hecht
Head of Acting, The National Theatre Conservatory/Denver Center for the Performing Arts
Exercises that help the actor sound like they're "truthfully" talking on stage. Useful techniques, no matter what period the text is from (from Shakespeare to Shepard). Tear the communication process apart and see how it works. Techniques to help the listening process. Techniques to aid relaxation and confidence.
1. Standards/Assessments - THE UPDATE: The clock is ticking...Theatre can lead the parade: are you ready...PWR and CTE...Karol and Jennifer and maybe John Epps.
2. HB10-1273 Arts Education: What's all this about Partnerships? A whole new Protocol...Extended Learning Opportunities indeed. What's the new win-win paradigm? How do we ensure complementarity? Enhance but not Supplant...all that vital stuff...Sheila, Gene Sobzak, Tam D., Jane Hansberry
3. PWR and Career Pathways: Here come the ICAPs - why should I care? Because they now MUST include the arts...How Theatre teachers can benefit (not just P-12 but PostSecondary too)...Gully, Charles Dukes, Karol Gates
